In celebration of Black History Month,Lets reflect candidly on the life of a premier pioneer for black fashion.
Eunice W. Johnson(April 4, 1916–January 3, 2010) creator the Ebony Fashion fair,co-founder of Ebony Magazine with her husband John, orchestrated a platform for black fashion to blossom. With a $500 loan, The Johnson's began publishing of the negro digest as a fashion counterpart to Reader's Digest in 1942. Ebony magazine now circulates 1.25 million weekly as well as the kin magazine Jet, which began in 1951 as a premise for African-American news.
Eunice Johnson was one of the first entrepreneurs to market cosmetics particularly for black women. The Ebony fashion fair, an annual celebratory tour showcasing haute couture & ready to wear fashion for African Americans, started out as a favor to a friend to raise money for a hospital in 1958. The showcase became a success, prompting events throughout the United States,Canada, and the Caribbean; Notable designers featured in these shows were Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent,Oscar De La Renta,& Valentino.
Eunice Johhnson is undoubtably a cultural icon. The passion expressed for fashion has catapulted her as an ambassador for the love of couture. All aspiring fashion moguls should follow in the stead of Eunice Johnson as a basis for success.
