Society with Style: Ashley Monae Interview

The Society Daily was so honored to interview upcoming stylist, Ashley Monae. She is definitely the young woman you want to look out for. Her drive is not going unnoticed and her vision is definitely the epitome of effortless style. Check out the full interview below.

When and how did you become a stylist?

Although I only became a true stylist about 7 months ago my fascination with fashion was one from birth. My Mother has always been into fashion and it was just something I grew up around whether tagging along on shopping trips or playing in my Grandmother's heels. My aspirations really unfolded after attending Howard University my freshman year of college. The University was literally a walking fashion show everyday. As months passed I worked for DC's Fashion Night Out along with another big production fashion show in Baltimore where I prepped models for past Project Runway contestants. Needless to say, I became deeply immersed in styling by the time my year was over with and dreams of being a stylist emerged. On becoming a stylist it was simple: I reached out to a well known celebrity stylist in Atlanta and asked if I could shadow him. Being impressed with my work ethic and skills he brought on board of his team and my career began from there.

What was your very first styling project?

My first styling project was actually for my portfolio. My friend who was trying to get into modeling had a friend who was a photographer. We all got together on a Sunday and grabbed clothes from my closet and hers. The photographer conveniently also did makeup. We slicked her hair back in a bun and I put my styling skills to work. We shot the looks on a blank white wall across from his house and til this day everyone sends praises my way for the professional look of that shoot

What fashion trend do you wish would go out of style?

Printed leggings. Females have gone overboard with the leggings craze. They should compliment your outfit not overpower and overshadow. So ladies, those american flag leggings have got to go!

Who are some of you favorite designers and why?

I am a very big fan of Helmut Lang, Stella McCartney, and Phoebe Philo of Céline. These three designers truly embody my monochromatic chic style. Their clothing is simple and effortless, yet grandeur and tastefully sexy.

How would you describe your style overall?

I'd like to say I'm a chameleon. I channel feminine chic and street couture mostly. Feminine chic can be described as conservative sexy that is eye catching but not fishing for compliments. You can relate those to the mix matching of neutral and neon colors, monochromatic schemes, sheer chiffon fabrics, etc. Street couture is like my alter ego so you can say. I love sneakers, hoodies, graphic tee's. If you ever see me on the campus at school I usually have on sneakers, men harem pants, and a tshirt.

What inspires you?

From Jay-Z to overseas Vogue editorials and Michelle Pfeiffer's wardrobe in Scarface I pull inspiration from everywhere.

What advice would you give to an aspiring stylist?

Two things: Do your research. When others see you are knowledgeable in your craft they will respect you. Secondly, always invest in your brand. No one can foresee your vision like you can.

What trends or designers do you think are up next?

With F/W (fall/winter) being right around the corner I believe designers are going to have a frenzy over feathers, velvet, fur, leather and statement hats.
